Bringing his combined expertise in chemistry, botany, and literature, professor and author of the book "Flowers and Plants in a Thousand Years of Persian Poetry," Dr. Bahram Grami, discusses the works of 13th century Persian Poet Rumi at Bentley University on Wednesday, April 1, 2009 from 12:30 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. in the Adamian Academic Center, Room 143, in Waltham, Mass. This event is co-sponsored by the Cronin International Center and the English Department at Bentley University.
Dr. Grami will deconstruct Rumi's poetic works, specifically the role flowers and plants play in his poetry in the form of different emotional expression. Denise DeSimone will bring a more personal touch to Grami's research by playing the guitar and singing some of Rumi's poetry.
Dr. Bahram Grami was born and raised in Tehran. He received his B.S. from University of Tehran, his M.S. from American University of Beirut, and his Ph.D in plant science and genetics from University of Manitoba, Canada. He was a researcher at the Agricultural Research Organization in Tehran and a member of the faculty at Esfahan University of Technology until he left Iran for the US in 1985. He left on a sabbatical leave, but stayed on to become a researcher at the University of California, Davis for ten years. He has also served as a visiting professor to University of Hong Kong and as an educational consultant in the office of President of University of Qatar. More recently, he has been scientific editor in American Association of Cereal Chemists and American Phytopathological Society. He is currently a Consulting Editor to the Encyclopedia Iranica. Dr. Grami has authored several books and over 100 articles in English and Persian. His latest book "Flowers and Plants in a Thousand Years of Persian Poetry" was published in 2008.
Denise DeSimone was born and raised in Newton, Mass. She is a motivational and inspirational public speaker, workshop leader, and cancer survivor with an extensive background in a wide range of holistic healing practices. These healing practices include sound healing, Reiki, polarity therapy, reflexology, shamanism and process therapy. For the past ten years, she has been a member and a chaplain at Unity on the River, "A Church of Celebration" in Amesbury, MA. Denise is also a student of the Chaplaincy Institute of Maine (CHIME), a two- year Ministerial program, and will be an ordained an interfaith minister in June 2009. Denise resides in the Newburyport, Mass. where she has lived for the past 15 years and is currently penning her first book.
